Promote Private Sector Initiatives

The Need

Most non-residential indoor space is owned and/or operated by private sector and are frequented by employees, consumers or general public. Premises with high occupancy or where occupants stay for extended periods are at greater risk if IAQ is not managed.

There are various recognition schemes, operated by the HKSAR Government, local and international institutions, to motive private sectors to take initiatives but the adoption rate is still low.

Majority of the buildings in Hong Kong do not adequately manage IAQ, exposing employees, customers, the general public, and other space users to the adverse effects of poor IAQ on health, productivity, and overall well-being.

Our Objective

Our overall objective is to increase the number of places equipped with IAQ management measures and encourage corporates to take IAQ into consideration in their planning and operation.

CAN aims to encourage private sector involvement through empowerment as well as moral and ESG recognition.

Specifically, private sector is encouraged to implement IAQ in terms of

  • Monitoring – continuous IAQ monitoring
  • Reporting – both internally among building management and externally among employees, consumers, tenants and via CAN’s database for public access
  • Improvement – attain a standard leveling with international green building certificates, including LEED, WELL, RESET, etc
  • Governance – ensure the whole process is owned by an established line of control so the above process can be conducted consistently
  • Communications – share achievement with all stakeholders including employees, customers, corporate clients, CAN, etc.

Our approach

CAN will initiate momentum among select sectors and expand coverage across time.

  • Make reference to local and international best practices of leading corporates
  • Form partnerships, establish model cases, co-host seminars and workshops, collaborate on impact evaluation
  • Establish recognition mechanism and facilitate more companies to adopt the best practices
  • Accumulate experience in overcoming the challenges faced by companies of various size across various sectors
  • Increase penetration of IAQ management measures
  • Popularize the adoption of IAQ Management

Throughout the process, we will work closely with CAN’s various partners to facilitate knowledge and experience sharing and to expedite the adoption of IAQ management practices in Hong Kong.
