Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) is the generic term for a group of highly reactive gases containing nitrogen and oxygen. This group of gases usually are the result of a high-temperature combustion process such as those produced by power plants and motor vehicles.

Many NOx is colourless and odourless, but nitrogen dioxide (NO2) can combine with particles in the air to form a reddish-brown haze over urban areas.

NO2 can cause the respiratory problem as it irritates the mucosa of the eyes, nose, throat and the lower respiratory tract. Long-term exposure to NO2 can lower a person’s lung function and resistance to respiratory infections.

NOx are important ingredients in ground-level ozone or smog, particulate matter and precursors to the formation of acid rain.
