5 major air pollutants

Clean Air is essential in healthy life.

BUT the air we breathe is a mix of pollutants that come from different sources. Electricity generation and vehicle emission are the major sources of air pollution.

Inhalation of the air pollutants can affect both our lungs and hearts. Many studies have found out long-term exposure to these pollutants can result in significant health problems damaging every organ in the body.

The common air pollutants in Hong Kong are:

  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • Fine suspended particulates (PM2.5)
  • Respirable suspended particulates (PM10)
  • Sulphur dioxide (SO2)
  • Ozone (O3)
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Lead
