Dah Chong Hong Case Study on Indoor Air Quality

Wellness in the Workplace – How Dah Chong Hong Make Use of the Latest Renovation Opportunity to Elevate Indoor Air Quality for Employees

Placing a strong emphasis on employee well-being and workplace environment, Dah Chong Hong Holdings Limited (DCH) strengthened the indoor air quality (IAQ) management in its headquarter office to foster a healthy and comfortable atmosphere.

Since its renovation, the DCH headquarter office in Kowloon Bay has attained the Platinum Certificate for WELL V2, LEED Certificate and the HKIAQ Excellent Class certification. With its efforts in implementing 10 WELL concepts, including Air, Water, Thermal Comfort, Light, Movement, Nourishment, Sound, Mind, Community and Materials management. DCH put a strong emphasis on air quality management and real-time IAQ monitoring to ensure smoking free environment, sufficient fresh air provision, moisture and mould control and air filtration control.

At the heart of the IAQ management strategy is the installation of real-time IAQ monitoring systems that cover the entire office space. The systems track a range of key air quality parameters, including PM2.5, PM10, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, total volatile organic compounds, and formaldehyde.

The air quality sensors are deployed based on floor size, ensuring comprehensive coverage that aligns with the space’s needs. For instance, facilities above 25,000 square meters feature at least 50 sensors, while smaller facilities employ a various density of monitoring devices to ensure optimal coverage.

Accessible via a mobile app and online interface, the IAQ monitoring system is connected with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. HVAC system can be self-adjusted based on temperature, relative humidity, and air quality level, to ensure a healthy and comfortable working environment for employees.

To further enhance IAQ, standalone air purifiers equipped with ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) technology are placed throughout the workspace. Also, advanced air filtration system is installed, including MERV 14 filters, in the HVAC system. The office also features innovative biophilic design and gardening room to ensure sufficient indoor greening.

Education plays a crucial role in DCH’s IAQ initiative. Employees participate in various green programs, including WELL and eco-tour education, pesticide use and cleaning practices education which promote awareness of sustainable practices and the importance of maintaining a healthy indoor environment.

The company has also implemented a material handling policy to reduce emission from paint and soil. Additionally, their strict policies prohibit the use of hazardous substances such as asbestos, mercury, and lead, ensuring that selected paints and construction materials are safe for all occupants.
