Pollutants from ocean-going vessels are the main source of air pollution in Hong Kong. Since 2011 pollutions near shores including the concentration of sulfur dioxide, suspended particulates and nitrogen dioxide, are higher than the roadside pollution and power plants.
On shore power system avoids the burning of fuels on those berthing cruises. It is estimated that on shore power system would bring social benefits of 5.23 hundred millions per year and avoid 42 premature deaths. The Hong Kong government should keep its promise on A Clean Air Plan for Hong Kong and set up on shore power system at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.
