The updated Hong Kong Air Quality Objectives (AQO) will be effective in 2020. Although the AQO is going to be slightly tightened, we called for a withdrawal of the new proposal to increase the number of exceedances to 35 times annually for PM2.5 during the period of public consultation held by the Environmental Protection Department. A public survey showed that over 70% of the interviewees were unsatisfied with the Government proposal to relax the allowable exceedances for PM2.5.
AQO Review Concern Group
CAN and the AQO Review Concern Group, a coalition of environmental groups, lawmakers and medical organizations, keep the pressure on the Government to further tighten AQO to the WHO Air Quality Guidelines ultimate targets. The AQO should go further to protect the health of 7 million people in the city against pollution.
