Despite air pollution has been alleviated over the past few years, Hong Kong’s public health is still under threat from unhealthy air pollution at roadside.  Deaths caused by air-pollution-related respiratory and circulatory diseases have risen to over 20,000 respectively in 2015. Being the second common killer after cancer, the figure makes up to 40% of annual registered deaths.
In the past few months, CAN have been soliciting support from health institutions, the business sector and the public to cosign an open letter to call on Chief Executive Mrs. Carrie Lam to hold Transport and Housing Bureau accountable for improving roadside air pollution in order to better safeguard public health.
We sincerely express our gratitude for the support from public members, health institutions as well as the business sector. As an international city, Hong Kong can and should ensure cleaner and safer air. Such a vision will be shared and welcomed by all sectors of the society. We look forward to seeing the government’s sustaining effort to safeguard public health.
